God saw everything he had made, and indeed, it was very good. (Genesis 1:31 NRSV)
Reflections by Keith Funk
Recently, I settled in an easy chair at the local library with a new book. The sun shone brightly and warmly through the picture window next to me. I was relaxed and satisfied as my schedule over the past couple of weeks had been very busy. After a few pages, I happened to look up and a young man with a back came in and sat opposite from me. I smiled at him and continued reading. After a moment, he asked what I was reading. I shared with him the title of the book, to which he then inquired about the book I was reading. I sensed he was wanting to converse, so I put down my book and began to visit with him.
The young man introduced himself as Markus. He is a local resident with some family in the area. He came to the library to use the computer and copier. As these were being used, he had come over with his things and waited until they were available. What was a momentary greeting shared between us became an opportunity for conversation. He shared with me some of his life, his history and struggles. He did so, however, with a smile and in a carefree manner. For the next few minutes, we shared back and forth something of our stories with one another. When it came time for me to leave as I had another appointment, I gave Markus my card. We shook hands mutually expressing our hope to run into one another again. A few brief moments, some listening and sharing, smiles offered, well-wishes expressed. A simple time for shared goodness for both Markus and me.
Ah, if only life were this simple. Then again, perhaps it is. Oh, to be sure, not every day in situation and circumstance do we have time to pause like this. On the other hand, maybe there is more opportunity to do so than we may think. For my part, I was glad about my time with Markus, as I believe he very much enjoyed our visit as well. I felt glad for the interruption that came with grace I had not anticipated.
At the end of the first chapter of Genesis, God looked over all his creation. Famously, we read that God saw that it was “very good.” The great and small were summed up by this expression. Here we encounter God’s creation created in goodness and well-being throughout. From the outset, this is how the story is expressed.
But what of our days, and what is before us? Could it be there is opportunity to experience such goodness in cluttered schedules, uneventful situations, and even ordinary circumstances? A passing word, a brief greeting, a moment’s listening—here is where opportunity lies for goodness to be received and offered. I guess this is what I took with me in my moments spent with Markus. The gift of goodness we shared with one another. As expressed in Genesis, it was “very good.”
Peace be with you.
